Emma Darby

We empower our teams to deliver wellness seriously.
Emma leads the strategic direction of our spa operations and brands, overseeing our global team of operations and training managers around the world.  Joining Resense as Operations Manager in 2012, Emma has been consistently promoted through achievement, becoming Regional Operations Director and more recently, Global Operations Director prior to our board appointing her formally as COO in 2019.  Having grown up in the health club business, Emma has spent the past 25 years carving out her own successful career in the spa, fitness and cosmetology industry throughout the Middle East, Europe, Central and South America.  Before joining Resense in 2012, she was a senior Spa Director for 6 years with Ritz Carlton managing spas in Tenerife, Dubai and the renowned Manama Spa in Bahrain.  She also successfully directed the award-winning Rosewood Spa in Mayakoba, Mexico and was instrumental in leading and expanding a non-invasive laser clinical company throughout the United Kingdom.  Emma is a true operator and understands the critical balance required to deliver luxurious experiences for guests and commercial return for owners and hoteliers.

Matthew Laird

We must challenge the status quo of spa design to create better places for wellbeing.
With over 25 years in the wellness industry and 7 years with Resense, Matt brings a wealth of experience in developing & managing destination spas and luxury health & fitness clubs to his role as Global Projects Director for Resense.  Prior to joining Resense, Matt was the Resident Manager at the Six Senses Destination Spa in Phuket, Thailand responsible for all medical, spa and wellness departments and managed the design and development of several leading hotel spas in the UK, Middle East and India including the multiple award-winning Blythswood Square spa in Glasgow.  As part of the ESPA consultancy team, he oversaw nine spas in Europe including the spas at the Gleneagles and Turnberry Resorts in Scotland and the Intercontinental at Mar Menor in Spain.  Matt operated several large health and beach clubs from the Holmes Place Health Club in Edinburgh to the Harbour Club in London and the Jumeirah Hilton Beach Club in Dubai.  Matt has also worked with Midtown Athletic Clubs in Chicago, the operator of some of the world’s leading luxury wellness membership clubs.  Matt’s extensive experience in developing and operating spas and membership clubs is key to design spas & wellness that work operationally and that deliver unique experiences that guests want to return to again and again.

As Global Finance Director, Cedric leads our corporate finance and governance.  Before joining Resense, Cedric acquired 10 years of experience in finance and business administration, within the luxury hospitality industry.  He graduated from the University of Paris Sud, in Business Management with a major in Finance and he held finance positions in well-known global organizations prior to working in the hospitality industry.  Cedric spent 7 years at Global Hotel Alliance in Geneva and Dubai, working in financial planning prior to becoming Director of Membership Services.  Cedric’s broad experience, understanding of hospitality financial management and strategic analysis are important for the financial analysis and support of our spas’ financial performance globally.

Alice Zhang

Alice joined Resense in 2014 as Regional Operations Coordinator and she rapidly progressed in the company through various positions before overseeing our subsidiary company in China.  After completing a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management in Beijing, Alice commenced her career in the Kempinski Head Office in China, where she rapidly progressed and proved her ability as a skilled and effective coordinator of hotel operations.  As Manager China, Alice supports the establishment of Resense’s business in China & Asia, the development of new spa agreements, the management of our day to day legal entity in China; as well as supporting the pre-opening and ongoing management of multiple spas in Asia.  Alice’s assistance in establishing our company in Beijing has been significant and her energy, reliability and organization make her an enduring and valuable member of the Resense team.

Marcus Fry

Marcus plays a key role in the active support of Resense’s spa operations in Europe.  Marcus joined Resense in 2015 as Spa Director for The Adlon Spa by Resense at the Hotel Adlon Kempinski in Berlin, for which he received the CEO Award for Excellence in 2017.  After delivering exceptional service and commercial performance and seeking a new challenge, Marcus joined Resense in 2019 as Operations Manager.  Throughout his 20-year career within the spa & wellness industry, he took part in the pre-opening and ongoing management of the multi-million spa at Lucknam Park in England, a Relais & Chateaux leading hotel, followed by managerial positions within the Waldorf Astoria Berlin and within Kempinski.  Fluent in German and English, Marcus has a very current, comprehensive view of spa operations and management allowing him to support and empower our spa managers to lead their spas effectively.

Sarah Watterson

Sarah’s extensive experience in many companies and countries contributes greatly to her senior role as Operations Manager for Resense.  Sarah is a seasoned wellness professional and has lived and worked in Europe, Japan, South East Asia and the Middle East.  She has over 30 years of experience in hospitality, spas & wellness and beauty, in pre-openings, group operations, rebranding, spa consultancy & development and holistic training.  Sarah has worked for luxury hotel groups such as The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, Rosewood, Shu Uemura KK, Chiva Som, Sha Wellness and Hilton Worldwide.  Sarah is also a Shiatsu and Chi Nei Tsang teacher and speaks fluent Japanese.  Her holistic experience allows Sarah to support the design, opening and operation of our spas & wellness to the highest standards.

After successfully managing a number of prominent, award-winning spas, Cholpon was promoted in 2019 to Operations Manager supporting Resense’s spas in Asia & the Middle East.  Cholpon has over 15 years of experience working in luxury hotel spas & wellness for Ritz-Carlton, Hyatt, Rotana and Kempinski.  Moreover, she is a graduate of Kyrgyz National University in Mathematics and Oriental Studies, with a specialization in Arab Countries.  Cholpon’s unique background has allowed her to master 4 languages: Kyrgyz, Russian, English and Arabic languages.  Cholpon’s exceptional management skills and deep understanding of how to maximise wellness in hotel spa operations ensure she is a great asset to the Resense operations team and all of the spas we support.

2009

Inception

Resense is formed as a joint venture of Europe’s oldest luxury hotelier, Kempinski, and renowned luxury spa consultancy, Raison d’Etre. 

2010

Globalization

We took over the operation of our first spa in Germany and opened spas in Egypt and Thailand.

2011

Expansion

Our portfolio grew to 30 spas in 11 countries around the world and we established our first office in Beijing, China.

2012

Independence

The partners of Raison d’Etre divide and conquer with the founders now leading Resense’s forward direction.

2013

Performance

Systems, tools & training are substantially upgraded, new tools created to actively support and enable spa teams to connect with guests and manage their spas to perform.

2015

Unification

With more than 50 spas now in design and management, Resense holds its inaugural Global Spa Managers’ Forum at The Ishtar Spa by Resense in Jordan. 

2016

Diversification

The dramatic improvement in all spas’ performances inspire scale.  We convert our proprietary management system into a software and roll out globally.

Celebration

All of the hard work delivers as all spas achieve strong profitability increases and many spas enjoy recognition with consistent industry awards.
